Ethical Beauty

Here are our two favorite sites that certify companies that do not test on animals (they also inform you of the ones that do). In general there is no need to test products on animals. Unfortunately traditional skincare has so many chemicals and toxic ingredients that companies decided to use animals as test subjects. Most ingredients in organic skincare are safe enough to eat, generally making them safe enough to put on your skin. Watch out for chemicals and toxins lurking in skincare. Learn to read ingredients and labels – if you can’t pronounce it then you probably should not be putting it on your skin! Your skin absorbs 60% of what it comes in contact with so think about this before you put toxic, carcinogenic chemicals on and in your body daily.

Both of these organizations are great resources and both have handy downloadable consumer guides. You can even get the Iphone app called Be Nice to Bunnies too so you have the list handy every time you go shopping!

PETA’s Caring Consumer site is a great resource. Everyone is familiar with PETA’s no fur campaigns and their activism. As you may know, PETA is a nonprofit organization with more than 2 million members and supporters. Through their Caring Consumer program, they seek to gather information on the animal-testing policies of cosmetics and household-product companies, obtain signed statements of assurance from companies that meet our cruelty-free criteria, and share this information with the public.

What is Leaping Bunny?

The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program administers a cruelty-free standard and the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo for companies producing cosmetic, personal care, and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories, or suppliers.
